DOZENS of art fans filled Corbett Plaza yesterday to witness the unveiling of the Highlands’ very own Bert Flugelman public sculpture.
Assisted by Deputy Mayor Graham McLaughlin, the 86-year-old Burradoo sculptor pulled the ribbon and revealed his 2.5-metre stainless steel creation, which was very well received.
Councillor Juliet Arkwright said the sculpture was a wonderful addition to the Highlands and donation process behind it was also the catalyst for the new Wingecarribee Arts Trust.
Managed by a board of community members and Councillors. The trust will allow people to make tax-deductible donations to public art and infrastructure projects.
“We are really lacking in public art, performance space and a regional gallery,” Ms Arkwright said.
“The trust will allow us to start building towards them.”
In addition to the sculpture unveiling, yesterday was also the official launch of the Wine Arts and Roses Festival.
Now in its third year, Tourism Southern Highlands executive manager Steve Rosa said 2009 would be even bigger with a number of new events.
