EACH year Moss Vale Public School holds a fete with a difference.
Last year, it was Kiss A Pig event; this year it is Sumo Wrestling Championship Match.
P & C president Karina Lane said six teachers were candidates for the Sumo Wrestling Championship Match. It is a similar concept to the “Kiss A Pig” event; children sponsor the teacher they would like to see in the championship match.
“The two teachers who raise the most will battle it out in a fun “sumo wrestling” match, wearing padded sumo suits,” she said.
“Included in the candidates is the principal, Mr Connery, who is currently in the lead with the most amount of money raised so far.”
These events add an extra hype to the fete.
The children really get behind sponsoring a teacher bringing in their pocket money and change.
Mrs Lane said the children really got involved.
“They love coming over to the jars each morning to see how much money is in them and who is in the lead,” she said.
“It is a lot of fun and adds extra excitement.”
The fete has a serious side as well.
Held each year for the past seven years, it is the P&C’s major fundraising activity for the school, raising between $12,000 and $16,000.
The money raised goes towards school resources for the students.
Mrs Lane said in previous years the P&C had managed to raise enough funds to have covered walkways installed around the school, also other things like PA systems and interactive whiteboards.
“The P&C’s focus for fundraising at present is literacy and technology,” she said.
“The P&C is trying to raise much need funds for literacy including home readers and guided reading material.
“The P&C is also trying to raise much needed funds for technology for the students, including interactive whiteboards.
“The aim is to have an interactive whiteboard in every class, and at approximately $6,000 each, you can see why major fundraising is important.
“At present there are only a few within the whole school.”
As with any fete there will be rides for the kids including Adrenalin Rush, Jurassic Adventure, Sabretooth giant slide, teacup and saucer ride and pony rides.
There are also lots of stalls and raffles and of course no fete would be complete without a chocolate wheel.
Entertainment includes the school choir, school band, school string ensemble, Moss Vale gymnastics, and Ta Mo Tao Martial Arts. The highlight of the night will be the sumo wrestling championship match at 7pm between the two teachers who raise the most amount of money.
Mrs Lane said it was great to see the whole school community working together to create such an exciting and fun-filled event.
“It makes it all worthwhile when we can pass those much needed funds onto the school to purchase resources for the students,” she said.
The fete is tonight, November 6, from 4.30pm-7.30pm.
