The Save Water Alliance has warned that the proposed Kangaloon borefield will affect a wider area of the Southern Highlands than many residents realise.
While opposition to the borefield has focused on its effect on Robertson and Kangaloon, the Save Water Alliance has pointed out that the declared borefield area will extend within five or six kilometres of Mittagong.
Maps included in the environmental assessment show the area to be developed over four stages, with the outer reaches close to Old South Road.
Save Water Alliance is also concerned about the visual impact of the borefield on the Southern Highlands.
The project will include 75 production bores, up to 90 monitoring bores, 35 kilometres of pipelines on Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) land and 15 km of pipelines across road reserve and private land, as well as two river discharge locations and with adjacent water treatment facilities.
Power lines along Tourist Road and through private property would require a 10-metre cleared corridor.
Storage ponds to be built as part of the water treatment are proposed on the corner of Kirkland and Tourist Road near the Nepean River, and at Diamondfield Field Road.
