NINE Epping riders and four support team members arrived in Corbett Plaza last Saturday on route to Canberra from North Epping to raise money for members in their community experiencing hardships.
The group arrived around 9.30am after leaving North Epping at 4am for the 312km ride.
Cyclist team member Mark Rowles was expecting 40-degree heat after Friday but welcomed the slight breeze and slightly cooler conditions on Saturday.
The ride was organised months ago after the Lin family tragedy in Epping occurred. The riders knew of the family and the one surviving member, Brenda Lin.
Rowles said the ride is for the people in their community.
“People in Epping who are doing it tough, those who get disgnosed with cancer and those struggling at the moment,” he said.
Dubbed The 300+ Club, the group has contributed $2000 between them for the “Ride for North Epping Community” fund set up by the Bendigo Bank North Epping.
Upon arrival in Bowral Rowles said he and all members of the ride would be relaxing after the all-day journey.
“We will be eating as much pasta and drinking as much beer as we can when we get to Canberra;” he said.
In preparation for the ride, the group would aim to ride 300km-500km a week.
Fellow rider, Graham Mallison said to train he would ride each day to work and back.
“I live 90kms each way from work so I would ride 180kms a day,” he said.
Le Tan sponsored the ride, providing all the food, jerseys and sunscreen for all riders and the support team, as well as free giveaways for local people along the way from the Le Tan van.
The giveaways included Le Tan sunscreen and beach balls, which were handed out in Corbett Plaza.
