Cyclists push for best riding tracks in the state

11/08/2008 5:11:00 PM
A PLAN to make Wingecarribee Shire the friendliest to cyclists in the state has received a thumbs up from local riders of all ages.

Wingecarribee Shire’s ten-year bicycle strategy for Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale aims to improve bike networks between the three major towns and encourage more people to ride for fun and for good health.

Cyclists, bike safety groups, Climate Action Now Wingecarribee (CANWin), cycle event organisers and local bike shops are among those asked for input into the strategy.

Wingecarribee Road Safety Officer Charmaine Cooper said she was pleased that the strategy included initiatives to encourage people to learn to ride safely as well as proposals for infrastructure such as bike paths and bike racks.

Mrs Cooper said while groups such as the Ben Mikic Foundation were already planning learn-to-ride and bike safety programs for children, she was keen to encourage programs for adults as well.

Mrs Cooper said comments so far on the strategy showed people of all ages enjoyed cycling, but many who would like to ride were deterred by lack of confidence, safety concerns and the lack of bike paths.
