THEY’RE not much good for eating, but they sure are fun to catch.
This is the official word on one of the most prevalent fish in Wingecarribee River near Berrima.
In fact, members of the Berrima Business Houses are so intrigued by the sport of carp fishing they have devised a special competition for the village.
The inaugural Fathers Day Carpathon will be conducted this Sunday, September 7, and organisers have high hopes for a great turnout.
Berrima Business Houses president, Andrew Hearn said the day would have the added bonus of culling a fish that had little or no benefit to the lifecycle in the river system.
However, all carp caught will be given a purpose, with processing company Charlie Carp hauling the fish away to turn it into fertiliser.
Mr Hearn said the very active business houses had been keen to introduce more activities in the village that attracted the interests of the broader community.
He said village Australia Day celebrations had long been a popular attraction on the calendar, and he hoped the carpathon would prove another iconic event for Berrima.
“I hope this year’s event will attract about 500 entrants,” he said.
“We have had incredible support from Blue Circle Cement Works, Wingecarribee Council and Berrima businesses.
