THE Narellan waste processing park which handles rubbish from Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee Shires has won a gold medal in the 2008 Premiers Sector Awards.
Operated by WSN Environmental Solutions, the Ecolibrium Mixed Waste
Facility at Macarthur Resource Recovery Park is designed to capture 100 per cent of greenhouse gases from household waste, power itself from green energy from waste and export enough surplus energy to the NSW Energy grid to power 1700 homes.
A materials recycling facility recovers resources like paper, plastic, metal and glass - meaning all three waste streams are treated at the one site.
WSN Environmental Solutions CEO Ken Kanofski commended Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee councils for their foresight in signing up to have their residents’ waste processed at the new facility for the next 15 years.
“These councils are showing great vision by preparing for a carbon-constrained future under the impending Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme,” Mr Kanofski said.
Wingecarribee Resource Recovery Manager Miles Lochhead, who chaired the tender process, said WSN Environmental Solutions developed the Macarthur Resource Recovery Park following a successful tender bid in December 2005.
“The bid was the culmination of many years of planning and development of one of the most innovative tenders in local government history with the quadruple bottom line process ensuring that the participating councils were provided with a long term sustainable solution to their waste management needs,” he said.
