IT’S that time of the year again when men around the country grow some upper lip hair in aid of men’s health.
Mittagong RSL has gotten behind the cause and come Sunday razors will be stashed away for a whole month.
Movember started in 2003 when a few mates having a beer decided that men had a lack of connecting and being actively involved in their own health.
During that conversation the idea of bringing back the moustache was born. In doing so they hoped to encourage men to talk about their health and raise a little bit of money along the way.
November is the designated month-long celebration of the moustache, and highlights men’s health issues specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.
On Sunday, men begin clean shaven and they have the rest of the month to grow their mo.
More than 25 men at the RSL are growing their moustcahes.
Along with Clubs NSW the money raised through Mittagong RSL will go to Paralympic gold medallist, Kurt Fernley, who will attempt to crawl the Kokoda track.
Kurt was born without the lower part of his spine.
A wheelchair athlete Kurt competes in track and road races.
For the past 18 months he has been training for the 96km Kokoda track, to do Crawling Mokoda, while raising awareness about men’s health issues.
Mittagong RSL marketing manager Daniel Marmot said Movember was gathering a fair bit of momentum.
“There are so many days out there for foundations, the two main causes that they support the prostate foundation and Beyond Blue, which is about men’s mental health,” he said.
“I think they are two very important things and I think it is a good way to make a serious issue a little bit more light-hearted.
“Men are usually too big and too tough to admit to having health problems or that kind of thing. So it helps to break those barriers down a little bit.”
Since its inception, more than $16 million has been donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue
