Highlands’ hedge row grow

16/07/2008 10:03:00 AM
THE Southern Highlands rural landscape is disappearing behind high hedges faster than first realised, according to community group HedgeWise.

Wingecarribee Shire Council’s latest efforts to control high hedges have been welcomed by HedgeWise member Jan Hainke, who has recorded the spread of hedges, especially Cypress leylandii (Leighton Green), over the shire for a decade.

Mrs Hainke said a recent ABC Illawarra talkback session about high hedges showed that many people were unaware of how high and how fast Cypress Leylandi could grow.

The popular hedge plants are sold through nurseries with the labels indicating they grow to 10 metres in 10 years. But Mrs Hainke’s photographs show that they can grow faster, and don’t stop growing after 10 years.

If council didn't approve inappropriate developments to begin with then the need for screening with high hedges to maintain privacy wouldn't be necessary.

Leylandii hedges are quick are cheap to establish and they do not spread into bushland. In a short time they provide wind and soil protection to allow other trees to establish behind them. They block the cross-paddock spread of noxious weeds while providing a massive CO2 sink. For others, such as Council and Hedgewise, to dictate what private landholders do on their properties is a very slippery - and, most likely, unenforceable - slope. Especially when these "scary" creatures have so many benefits. Hopefully, they'll be used more in the future to screen out those "unsightly" solar panels and wind turbines. Trees - you gotta love 'em!
