Massive fine for L-Plater

3/07/2009 10:43:00 AM
A SYDNEY L-Plater was fined $1859 and had his licence suspended on the spot after he was allegedly clocked doing 141kmh on the Hume Highway at Mittagong on Wednesday night.

Mittagong Highway Patrol caught the 26-year-old, who is not allowed to travel more than 80kmh as a learner driver, shortly after 9.30pm heading north in a silver Toyota Camry sedan.

Under the new demerit point scheme introduced on Wednesday, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45kmh attracts a loss of six demerit points, a six-month suspension and a $1859 fine.

A 27-yerar-old Enfield man, who was supervising the driver, was issued with an infringement notice for failing to supervise a learner driver.

Fantastic. I hope all learner and permit drivers take note. Too many of them have caused misery and injuries to others in the Southern Highlands for dangerous or drunken driving. I am sure there are young responsible drivers but too many are doing the wrong thing. Like the P plater that nearly ran over my baby and me this week while we were walking along our local road (which has no sidewalk). He was doing about 20-30 kms above the speed limit and didn't seem to care that he was endangering lives. Thank you to our local police for catching this fool.
