Mental health help on hand

12/05/2008 8:14:00 AM
Geoff Aldridge and Debbie Reyes are urging residents to take advantage of a new community service for people with various mental illnesses.

They are the organisers of the Southern Highlands Day to Day Living Program, a federally funded program aiming to assist people with persistent mental illness that limits their social interaction.

Based at the old Moss Vale Bowling Club, the program includes tennis, meditation, art drawing and group outings.

Mr Aldridge said it was essential to make the community aware of the program during its early stages.

“These programs have been developed by the Federal Government and non-government health organisations to address the problem of mental illness in regional areas such as the Southern Highlands,” he said.

“At this point, we’re only open Wednesdays and Thursdays, and it’s very much why we’re really keen to get the word out that we exist.

“People must know there is a facility available to them that can help them improve the quality of life that might be limited due to their personal struggles.”
