Modern facilities to attract tourists

23/07/2008 9:33:00 AM
AFTER many years of an increasing tourism accommodation shortage in the Southern Highlands, things are finally looking up.

A string of new developments and renovations to existing accommodation sites have gotten underway recently with the Grand Mercure Apartments Heritage Park the first to open its doors to the public.

Located on the old Grand Mercure Hotel site in Bowral, the development offers 26 luxurious, self-contained apartments, which Tourism Southern Highlands executive manager Steve Rosa says is just what the region needs.

“We’ve got 1100 beds here all up but we just can’t cater for the demand on weekends,” he said.

“Business tourism such as conferencing and conventions during the week is also a problem because we can’t house large groups in one location.

“The Grand Mercure Apartments go part way to solving that problem.”

Mr Rosa said more accommodation had been needed for sometime in the Highlands, and building restrictions and hesitant investors were major deterrents for new developments in the past.
