No newspaper for you

Mollie Murphy is 92 years old and lives just two minutes from the centre of Bowral, but her property still falls short of the newspaper delivery boundary.

“My family own Carribee Farm on Railway Road in Burradoo,” Mrs Murphy’s daughter, Roz Murphy said.

“We have a mail box at the bottom of our private entrance road (pictured), which the postman manages to deliver to without any problem, but the newsagency refuses.

“They said they would deliver papers to our mailbox at Oxley College but they wouldn’t cross the river to get to our main mailbox.

“My mother is 92. She can’t drive on public roads so she can’t get to Oxley.

“We’re away most weekends at polocrosse so my mother is alone in the house with no way of getting the papers.

“And the Oxley mailbox belongs to one of our houses that other people are renting at the moment, so it’s not even really ours.”

Highlands Marketplace Newsagency is the only newsagency in the Southern Highlands that delivers newspapers.

A spokesperson for the newsagency said, for safety reasons, they cannot cross the river to take papers to the Murphy’s main mailbox.

“The bridge is very close to the river and poses a serious risk from flooding.

“We are happy to deliver papers to the Murphys at their mailbox at Oxley College, but for safety reasons we cannot allow drivers to cross the river.
