Police on assault charges

9/07/2008 10:16:00 AM
THREE Bowral police officers have been charged with assaulting a 36-year-old man on March 22.

The charges stem from an incident outside a hotel in Bong Bong Street where the man was allegedly drunk.

He was arrested and taken to Bowral police station and charged with refusing to obey a move-along direction and using offensive language.

It is alleged the man was assaulted by police during the arrest and later at the police station.

A police spokesman said the male officers, aged 36, 43 and 44 years, were the subject of an investigation by a Detective Inspector from Goulburn Local Area Command, which was overseen by the Southern Region Professional Standards Manager.

“One officer has been charged with common assault,” he said.

“Another officer has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“The third officer has been charged with common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.”

Who would ever thought police in Bowral would do such a thing, but until you have something to do with them, you wouldn't think of it. I have had to deal with police in Bowral and I can say they do have some good ones but the bad ones out weigh their effort.

As these police have been charged, that means there was enougth evidence to charge them. When they go to court will they be dealt with the full weight of the law as they should have known better as they are the police, who are supposed to have up held the law not break it.

Most officers in Bowral are fantastic but there were a couple who were mistreating the public.

I knew it was coming, police officers in Bowral treat people in a shocking way. They need to be noticed for the way they treat the public.

Just remember people, these are just allegations, the officers are innocent until proven guilty. A court will determine what, if anything actually occurred, or if they are vexatious complaints from a drunk who was irritated by the police doing what the community expects of them, that is get drunks off the streets. If anyone doubts it, take a drive down Bong Bong Street in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings... It looks like a garbage tip, drunks trippng over everywhere, vomit over the footpaths and smashed shop windows. The pubs in Bowral are more interested in profit than responsible service of alcohol and continue serving until patrons start causing trouble, when they are then ejected and lead us to where we are now. The police deserve our support. Would you rather be enjoying a saturday evening with friends and family, or dealing with drunks? Someone has to.

Its about time, police have been getting away with that sort of stuff for years I'm glad to see that the public can still fight back and hopefully win.

Police need a wake up, that they can't treat the public like we are beneath them.

Why not name and shame the police like everyone else???? Come on fair crack of the whip.

I agree that these officers should be named and shamed. If it were a member of the public that assaulted someone they would be named wouldn't they?

Allegations have been made of a descriminative and biggoted culture with in the station and I, as a number of other young Highlanders have witnessed this first hand.

I admit that they do a tough job but they chose to do it!

I hope they feel the full weight of the law!

I have had a personal and close long term association with Bowral Police Station and most of the officers there are the most dedicated, honest and ethical officers you would ever meet.

During my personal experiences there have been a couple that were not, who are no longer at that station.

It seems to me that a criminal's word is taken as truth, far too often, and so can ruin peoples lives.

The NSW Police Force desperately need attention.

There is one senior woman officer in particular who is a stand out at Bowral. Leave these good people alone.

Hi.Commenting on the police of the Southern Highlands I'd like to say that there job is like any other job. If you don't like it leave. There are according to my son a few good officers around. Being on his P plates for the last year have been a wake up to him of the fact that P platers are a prime target for the police. I don't disagree with the zero tolerance, in fact it is good that they look after the young people, and in a way that help ease or mind as parents. My son has been pulled over quite a few times by the local police, and when he asks them why, their responce is "I don't have to tell you why" what sort of responsible attitude is that?

If the police don't have any respect for a driver regardless off age why should the driver have any respect for the police. It's about time both the young and the police start working together within the community. Police would have more co-operation and there work made easier with help from the locals. Instead they seem to make it harder by discouraging the community to help when was the last time a police car pulled some one over and commended them on doing the right thing? Never. If someone breaks the law then they pay the price if someone knows the law do they pay the same price? I don't think so.
