THE hall at Mittagong Public School echoed with the sound of clapping as pupils gave retiring principal Brett Neil a standing ovation.
There were tears, as the much loved and respected principal left the building for one last time.
Mr Neil began at the school three years ago having moved from Hay Public School.
A teacher for 29 years, he is retiring because of health reasons.
In a moving ceremony P & C president Charmaine Cooper spoke of Mr Neil's passion for teaching and Mittagong Public.
"There are so many things that you will be long remembered for, picking up rubbish wherever you went, which showed how proud you were of the place," Ms Cooper said.
"Being here on weekends or in holidays to water the garden and catch up on paperwork.
"Most especially knowing children's names throughout the school and usually their parent's names as well.
"Thank you so much for making the education and safety of our children your top priority. Thank you for your humour, dedication, patience and enthusiasm."
Mr Neil spoke of the sheer joy of teaching and assisting children to reach their potential.
Having worked in country schools, he also spoke of the contact with parents and working with them and teachers to improve school facilities.
During his time at Mittagong Public he focused on and improving the basic skills of the pupils, as well as staff training and development.
He also worked on improving the look of the school and the promotion of the school in the community as well.
Mr Neil said he would miss interacting with the school community, teachers, students and the P & C.
"I will miss contact with the students and seeing them develop as they complete school," he said.
Remaining in the Highlands, Mr Neil is looking forward to spending time with his family and to enjoy his improved health.
