Truck tips over

3/07/2009 10:35:00 AM
HEAVY winds and a difficult turn caused a semi trailer to tip over at a Bowral roundabout yesterday.

At around 1pm, the 12 tonne truck was attempting a 270-degree turn from Funston Street into Moss Vale Road when a gust of wind hit, rendering the driver helpless as it fell on its side, according to the driver.

When police and firefighters arrived, the bonnet was ripped off and petrol was leaking down Kangaloon Road.

A passer by acted quickly using a sand bag to dry up the small amount of fuel spilled on the road before the firefighters arrived.

Police said the driver, who escaped uninjured, was unlikely to have been driving irresponsibly.

The roundabout is said to be particularly challenging for trucks as the arch of the road makes turning difficult. The Bureau of Metrology reported westerly winds gusting up to 34 knots in Moss Vale shortly after 1pm.

The truck, which originated in Alexandria in Sydney, had nearly reached its destination at Moss Vale to deliver glass panels before it tipped over.
