Zac Godbolt has the magic touch

02 Nov, 2009 09:19 AM
“MY ultimate goal is to perform in Vegas,” Zac Godbolt said.

And considering that at just 13 years of age he has already established himself as a successful magician, his dream may not be that far off.

For the past two years the Southern Highlands Christian School student has been bringing his comical magic routine to kids parties and the occasional adult function in Sydney, Canberra and across the shire.

“It’s pretty cool,” Zac said.

“Mum set up my first show at a kids’ birthday party for a friend of hers and thanks to word of mouth, it just grew from there.”

His routines include everything from card tricks and juggling to acts with his very well trained pet rabbit and dove.

“I started out with some magic sets that you can get from places like Toy World,” he said.

“Then I upgraded to more completed tricks, which you can get from magic stores in Sydney.

“I’m also a member of a magic club in Sydney.

“But really, my shows are 40 per cent tricks. The rest is laughter, gags and showmanship.”

A self confessed attention seeker, confidence in front of an audience is something that just comes naturally to Zac.

And while performing to people his own age was a little intimidating at first, with 50 paid shows under his belt, he’s got the hang of it.

That’s not to say everything always goes ahead as planned.

“Tricks don’t always work,” he said.

“I was doing this one where I pass a needle through a balloon, but the needle was bent and I must have popped about five before I gave up.

“The kids loved it. They thought it was hilarious.

“That’s why I do comedy. So when you stuff up you can just pretend it’s part of the act.”

Zac is determined to continue his magic while he finishes school and then hopes to study drama after Year 12.

And then with any luck, he’ll be off to Vegas.

“I love being a magician,” Zac said.

“I’m doing something fun, which shows me off, makes other people happy, and I get paid for it.

“It is a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of practise and there’ve been a few injuries, particularly with the fire tricks (sorry Dad).

“But it’s worth it.”
