Concern over escalating demands on the Southern Highlands water resources is boiling over, with Wingecarribee Shire Council backing community concerns over the Kangaloon aquifer.
In a submission to the Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) adopted on Wednesday, Wingecarribee Shire Council formally opposed the State Government’s plan to pump up to 45 billion litres of groundwater a year over three years from the Kangaloon aquifer.
Council’s submission described the State Government borefield project as “flawed policy” and called for a more thorough investigation of alternatives such as water recycling and demand management.
The submission criticised the short pumping trials, “nebulous” phrasing and “paucity of site specific information” on the impact on threatened species and roadside vegetation.
Mayor Gordon Lewis, Deputy Mayor Paul Tuddenham and Cr Larry Whipper will seek a meeting with NSW Planning Minister Frank Sartor to voice the concerns of Council and the community.
