A SMALL but ultimately successful team of Highlands athletes competed at the annual NSW Country Athletics Championships recently.
Held at the Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre in Wollongong, the popular annual event attracted athletes from all over country NSW and excludes those members of clubs in the Sydney metropolitan area.
The ever successful Shaw family; Christine, Rachel and Hayden garnered 11 medals between them and Peter Reed, competing as a 50-year-old for the first time, pulled in three medals including a new record in the men’s 50-59 discus.
Most amazing was the performance by Chris Shaw who bagged two golds and a bronze despite a severe knee injury.
Bowral Little Athletics president Peter Reed said Christine Shaw’s effort was remarkable.
“She has to have an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] rebuild in the coming months, but she battled on with one leg and was outstanding,” he said.
