MOSS VALE under-18s got their Southern Junior League basketball campaign off to a flying start with three wins from four matches in Canberra last weekend.

The Magic beat Goulburn 59-54, Illawarra 62-58 and Kiama 84-45 and their only loss was a two-point defeat by Canberra Gunners.

In the match against Canberra, the Magic had only six players and Liam Canning was forced to play with an ankle injury after rolling it in their first game.

Moss Vale were outpointed 16-14 in the first term before fighting back to 31-all at half time.

The Magic kicked nine points clear in the third quarter but ran out of steam as the Gunners stormed home with a 19-8 last term to win 66-64.

Dayne Hutchinson top scored for Moss Vale with 20 points while Tom Meyers hit 14 and Canning 10.

The squad was bolstered by four more players on Sunday and the team breezed to two wins.

The next round of the tournament is on May 16 and 17 in Wollongong.
