 Not enough for Norrie

Not enough for Norrie

MISSING out on selection in the Country under-17s has not fazed Bowral teenager Will Norrie.

The Chevalier First XI skipper represented Southern Country against Northern Country in the Country team trial match at Bradman Oval on Saturday. The leg-spinner finished with figures of 0-35 of seven overs and helped dismiss Northern for just 185. Southern’s batsmen then went on the rampage racking up 3-348. Southern player Kieran Gray (101) and Illawarra’s Jo McDevitt (105), who both made the Country team, blasted the Northeners to all corners of Bradman Oval.

Three players from the under-17 Southern Zone team made the Country line-up. Norrie played three games for Southern Zone this summer as well as playing in a combined City/Country team against the ACT earlier in the year.

The 16-year-old said it was good experience but was disappointed to not make it into the Country team.

“I went alright but didn’t get any wickets and was a bit disappointed,” he said. “I am not giving up and will keep on going with it. You can only get better.”

Like most budding leg-spinners Norrie learnt a lot of his skills watching Shane Warne bamboozle batsmen across the globe.

“I like bowling wrong-uns. They sometimes spin more than my leg-spinners,” he said.

Norrie, an all-round sportsmen who also played rugby in Chevaliers First XV this winter, took a shining to spin bowling after having to bowl a lot to older brother Matt.

Will joined his older brother in Bowral’s first grade team before the Independent Schools Association competition started this year and he hopes to will play for them again later in the summer as soon as the ISA season finishes.

After losing two of their first three games Norrie said he was confident Chevalier could finish the season without losing again and was keen to avenge the team’s loss to Highlands rivals Oxley when they meet again.

Working over batsmen and having a variety of deliveries is why Norrie likes leg-spin bowling. The year 12 student said Mitchell Johnson’s attacking style with both bat and ball made him one of his favourite players at the moment.
