ROBERTSON-BURRAWANG will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the first grade BDCU Cup table with an outright win over Bowral at Chater Oval.
In the first round of two-day games only one wicket stands between Robertson taking first innings points. Bowral are nine wickets down and face a deficit of 194 runs heading into day two. The young team needs to step up in their second innings and bat patiently to avoid surrendering all 20 points.
On a grass covered wicket Robertson were sent into bat by Bowral skipper Duncan Macpherson and after a few middle order hiccups posted 250 at better than five runs an over.
Facing the remaining 26 overs of the day Bowral’s reply went from bad to worse and they finished at stumps on 9-56.
Only two batsmen reached double figures after Macpherson went for two and Bowral imploded from 3-37 to 7-42 in the space of five overs. Kylie Martin fell back on his stumps and Alex Preddey was run out in the last over of the day in a forgettable effort by the young Bowral outfit.
Robertson’s attack shared the spoils with Mitch Wright backing up from top scoring with 59 to take 2-11. Duncan Urquhart (2-13), James Hart (2-17), Ben Buffett (1-13) and captain Nathan Wright (1-2) all chipped in.
Several of Robertson’s line-up made starts in their innings but only Mitch Wright (59) went on with it. Nathan Wright (49) and Dean Roxbrough (36) put Robertson on the front foot with a 55-run second wicket stand and Mitch Wright and Scott Sheppard (25) established a 49-run eight-wicket partnership to close out the innings.
Bowral’s Alex Andelkovic (3-16) wrapped up the tail with Peter Roughton (3-49), Tim Devitt (2-47), Martin (1-38) and Preddey (1-40) also taking wickets. Dropped catches didn’t help Bowral’s effort but restricting the league leaders to 250 kept Bowral in the match. But their disastrous reply all but handed first innings points to Robertson.
Nathan Wright said there was a bit in the usually flat Chater track and he was happy with the team’s score.
“I was aiming for around 240 so 250 was a good result,” he said.
“We are eying up an outright of course.”
Disappointed to fall short of a half century Wright said he didn’t bat as well as in previous weeks but it was harder innings on a bowling friendly pitch. Younger brother Mitch’s innings was the highlight.
“It’s the best I’ve seen him bat in a few years and then he came out and bowled awesome. He must have beat the bat 40 times,” Wright said.
“We had six caught behinds, they were all edges.”
Other brother Ben Wright is yet to turn it on with the bat, but the new Robertson wicketkeeper is due for a big innings according to Nathan Wright.
“He took five and dropped two catches and he’s well overdue for a good knock,” he said.
Wright said Steve Fairbairn would return to opening the batting when he gets back, after being kept out of the side for disciplinary reasons, and Roxbrough would shift back to the middle order where he’s experience was needed.
