WINGELLO scored 188, but it wasn’t enough to take the competition points against Workers/Coolavin in Goulburn on Saturday.
The Tigers, searching for their first win in two seasons, were happy with the way they started 2009/10, according to captain Michael Pike.
“We actually went pretty well and it was a solid start to the year,” Pike said.
“It was disappointing to lose but we can take a lot from the game.”
Sent in to bat on a soft wicket, Wingello made their way to 4-110 and looked on track for a big score.
But the Tigers lost a few quick wickets before a late 71-run partnership between Grant Pike and Paul Briggs took the total to 7-181.
Wingello finished at 9-188, with Pike the best performed with 71, while James Baldwin (33) and Cameron Pike (24) offered some good support.
Workers opening bowlers Sam Taylor (3-23) and Nick Prell (2-24) were the pick of the bowlers.
The Workers openers Dennis Carroll (22) and Andrew Squires (65) put on 90 for the first wicket, before Ben Staples (46) and Dane Stevenson finished off the job.
They passed Wingello’s score three wickets down in the 43rd over.
Captain Pike said his team struggled to take wickets as the pitch settled down in the second innings.
“Obviously we struggled to get early wickets and that cost us,” he said.
“The pitch was still a bit up and down, but it definitely played a bit better for them [Workers].”
