THE Wingello Tigers second grade cricket team recorded their first win of the season when they scraped home by three wickets in a thriller against the Hill Top Kookaburras at Bill O’Rielly Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Hill Top batted first and struggled early on to score runs off the bat due to some patches of nice fast bowling from ex-Kookaburra Brendan Irwin [1-41] as well as some tight swing bowling from Dornan [2-14].
Sundries ended up being the top scorer before drinks with a total of 28 being bowled to help make up Hill Top’s total of 3/54 at the 20-over stage.
Garry Hatton then took over proceedings belting a magnificent 54 not out, which included one massive six over midwicket requiring an 11-man Tigers search party to head into the bush.
Dave Walker was the only other genuine contributor [21 not out] in Hill Top’s innings of 8-155 off 36 overs.
Wingello started their innings in an attacking fashion, with Boyd [48] and Irwin [22] cruising along until Hill Top’s spinner Matthew Doust (2-33) provided a change in pace that put an immediate stop to the two batsmen’s innings.
The small amount of spectators were treated to a spectacular catch before drinks after Hawksley edged his first and only ball to the ‘keeper, only for it to rebound off his glove and fall into the diving hands of Doust at first slip.
Wingello captain Shane Robson [28] steered the Tigers through a tough stage after drinks, with Hill Top’s bowlers David Angel [3-35] and Walker [2-24] taking multiple wickets while keeping runs down.
The tension around the field grew as Wingello required 12 runs off the last 18 balls, but the cool and collected Dornan [10] ensured the Tigers claimed their maiden victory for the season.
