Jumping the border

05 Jun, 2009 05:30 PM
MOSS VALE’S Laura Wallace and Robertson’s Alexandra Townsend are among Australia’s best equestrians competing at the Melbourne 3 Day Event which starts at Werribee today.

The ladies have packed up their horses and crossed over to Victoria to compete in the CIC* (one-star) category and will be up against Beijing silver medalists, Megan Jones, Shane Rose and Sonja Johnson.

Over 150 of Australia’s best horse and rider combinations will compete in the equine equivalent to a triathlon.

Wallace and Townsend and their respective mounts have to compete in three very different disciplines - dressage, cross country and showjumping.

Wallace left for Werribee on Tuesday and will compete on her young horse Silenzio.

The professional rider finished 10th in the one-star event last year on board KP Fedwell, but hopes to do better this time around.

“There are about 65 horses in the one-star category so there will be plenty of competition,” the rider originally from New Zealand said.

“I expect we should finish in the top 10.

“We went to Quirindi last weekend and went really well so we should do well again.”

The riders and their horses are expected back on Monday or Tuesday.
