Highland Hawks struggle to fire in wet conditions

31 Jul, 2009 04:25 PM
ROUND 12 was a dismal day for the Hawks and they could only manage two wins from the six scheduled games played in bleak conditions at Loseby Park.

The under-17 Nowra-Highlands combined side continued its winning way and look certain to play in the decider in September after completely outclassing Ulladulla.

The team has developed a “take no prisoners” approach and in the last quarter, although already in a commanding position, they banged on another seven goals.

The only other Hawks win this round came from the polished under-13s who gave another textbook style performance and kept their opponents, Shellharbour Swans, scoreless.

In an even Hawks side, Tim Coenen’s spectacular mark and long bomb goal with a wet ball were the highlights.

Even the under-10s came crashing down to earth when they met a confident Kiama Power who allowed the home side only one behind.

Despite the poor conditions, it was a great day for the defence where Lauren Cox and Oscar Gowland played well in particular.

Brendan Garske was the lone scorer for the under-11s who encountered a strong Shellharbour combination.

Michael Duck and Tearloch Carr were strong in defence but could not stem the flow of their opponent’s scoring opportunities.

The result in the under-12 game was similar with Mark Stein registering the only score for the Hawks against Kiama Power.

Now that the holidays have finished, all the sides will be able to settle down and finish off the season with full playing lists.

The club travels to several different venues this week but will enjoy playing the last two games at home to finish the season.

The committee has been busy behind the scenes and the upcoming auction night on Friday, August 7, looks like being a great night, as will the presentation evening set down for Friday evening September 18.

Congratulations are in order for Luther Canute, Phil Syrros and Daniel Bollom who have all made respective representative train-on squads.
