Dunk goal saves Yerrinbool’s season

03 Aug, 2009 12:45 PM
YERRINBOOL-Bargo centre back Brian Dunk was his team’s unlikely hero, with a goal in the dying minutes to beat Robertson-Burrawang 1-0 on Saturday.

Both sides were missing strike power/ The Bushrangers without Trevor and Luke Dinham and Ben Miller, who between them score most of Yerrinbool’s goals.

But Robertson were missing strikers Matt Fernandez and Adam Bartlett.

As such, neither team could break the deadlock until Brian Dunk’s goal from the edge of the 18-yard box.

The goal completes an unlikely double for the defender who also scored in last week’s win over Moss Vale.

Yerrinbool coach Rob Miller, who played a full match leaving the Bushrangers’ bench bare, said he was relieved to come away with the 1-0 result.

“Before the game I said to the team that if we could grind out a 1-0 win then I would be happy,” he said.

“We have been struggling for players each week.

“We have a bye next week and then hopefully we will have the full compliment back heading into the finals.”

Robertson coach Damien Plain said the result typified his team’s season.

“It’s been hard to get a full team on the pitch at the one time,” he said.

“Even if we had one of our strikers yesterday then it would have been a different story.”

Plain called on three third graders to step up into first division.

The win restores Yerrinbool’s place at the top of the table, after they were headed by Exeter last Sunday.

Exeter’s 4-1 win in a catch up game took them level with Yerrinbool on competition points but in front with a superior goal difference.
