Coffey grinds out a narrow lead

THE Gibraltar Country Club championships continued with round two played last Saturday.

And again the members made the most of near perfect conditions returning some excellent scores.

The championships continue over the next two weeks with round three tomorrow before the final round on Saturday, November 7, to be played in conjunction with the November medal.

The final round will be played as a compulsory seeded draw comprising the top four players in the scratch and nett section of each grade.

Martin Coffey, playing off a handicap of 6, won A-grade with a scratch round of 70 for a net 64 on a countback from Chris Delahunty.

Delhunty (12) shot a 76 scratch for a nett 64. The scratch winner was Allan Bray with 72. Both Martin and Chris played excellent rounds with Martin now the championship leader after two rounds.

John Smith (Moss Vale) off 15 won B-grade with 80 scratch for a net 65. The runner-up was Dave Thomas (17) with 83 scratch for a nett 65. The scratch winner, on a countback, was Graeme Boulton with 81.

Lee Taylor is the B-grade championship leader after two rounds following a 78 in the first round.

Andrew Bell (23) won C-grade with 88 scratch for a nett 65, from runner up Bob Liehr off 20 with 87 scratch for a net 67.

The C-grade scratch winner was Barry Ling with 88. Bob Liehr is the C-grade championship leader after two rounds.

The club championship leader board after round two was as follows:

A-grade scratch: Martin Coffey 143, Wayne Knapp 144, Allan Bray 149, Paul Attwood 156, Greg Morgan 158

B-grade scratch: Lee Taylor 159, Peter Rainbow 164, Graeme Boulton, Andrew Hayes, Terry Harman and Chris Campbell all 169, Karl Bolte 170

C-Grade scratch: Bob Liehr 172, Andrew Bell 180, Chris Dunne 181, Ron Berney and Dave Holland 182, Allen Delamont 185

The NTPs were won by Bray on the 4th, John Smith the 9th, John Hobbs won the Pro’s NTP tenth, Frank Zarboch the 12th, Boulton won the 15th and Warren Jones the 18th. Birdie hole 11 won by Delahunty.

In the ball competition there were 14 balls to net 68 won by Coffey, Delahunty, Jim O’Keefe, Bray, Steve Shute, Zarboch, John Smith, Boulton, Thomas, Taylor, Graham Hartnup, Bell, Liehr and Barry Ling.
