THE first Southern Highlands Legends Classic Pro-Am at Bowral Golf Club on Tuesday has been hailed a great success.
Featuring some of the great players of the last 30 years, including Roger Davis (pictured) and Mike Harwood, the Pro-Am saw 60 senior pros from across the country mix it up with 90 amateurs.
New South Welshman David Saunders (68) won the Classic by one shot over Queenslander Mike Ferguson (69) with fellow Sunshine State golfer John Tolhurst (70) finishing third. Saunders took home $1700 out of the $10,000 in prize money for the event, with the top 22 finishers sharing the spoils.
A team of lady members, Noala McMurray, Wendy Burke and Robyn McGinnes, who also won the longest drive prize, combined with pro Allan May to take out the team best two stableford event with a score of 87 points.
Second spot was decided on a countback with John and Gordon Conolly, Len Brandon and Pro Randall Vines pipping Alex Dowling, Helen Martin, David Mathers and Saunders after both teams finished on 85 points.
Bowral Club Pro Tony White said the club was hoping to make the Classic a yearly event and make the Australian PGA legends Tour event a highlight of the calendar.
“The course was in great shape and the pros passed on their congratulations for the good conditions,” White said.
“The members also loved it and the pros were good enough to pass on some tips and really embraced the event.”
Having a quarter of the club’s 380 playing members out on the course on Tuesday made the Pro-Am a real local event. The Southern Highlands Classic was the first Legends Tour event in NSW since January and the PGA’s Daryl Purchase said they day was exceptional.
“Larry Canning and Steve Anderson along with Tony White did a great job organising the event,” Purchase said.
“We expect the tournament to go ahead in leaps and bounds. It has a lot of potential.”
