CHRISTIAN Wood broke a four-year drought to win his first Moss Vale Golf Club Championship victory over defending champion Frank Beveridge.
Wood put together rounds of 79, 76, 70, 72 for a four round total of 297 to beat Beveridge.
Wood was a deserving champion after parring the course over the closing 36 holes.
After coming so close last year when Beveridge’s brilliant fourth round 69 pipped him on the line the fist pump upon holing out on the 18th green on Saturday showed how much the championship meant to Wood.
Beveridge won the Ken Jeffery Trophy for the best overall 72 hole nett score in all grades. Teenager Sam Feaver was the runaway winner of the junior championship and the overall leader through the half way mark finishing on a four round total of 311. Trevor Reeves was the senior champion with a score of 312.
The B-Grade championship went to Russell Spencer who, after some nervous mid-round moments and miscalculations, was a very deserving start to finish winner in 2009.
Spencer started with a first round 80 followed with 89, 85, 83 for a four-round total of 337 and was never headed in claiming this year’s title from Gary Whybrow on 342 closely followed by John Cassidy on 343.
Tony Tozzi just held out the fast finishing Ron D’Adam to claim this year’s C-Grade title. Tozzi held an 11-shot lead going into the last round after fantastic rounds of 90, 87, 86 which proved enough even with his closing round 99 to finish on 362 and win by two shots from D’Adam (364) and Shirhan Ho a further seven shots back on a four-round total of 371.
Club general manager Jason Harwood was pleased.
“To all the champions this year, congratulations on a fantastic result and to the greens staff who had the course in absolute perfect shape for the championships - job well done,” he said.
