THE Bowral Kangaroos and Burrawang under-11 hockey teams battled out an intense grand final at the Welby hockey centre on Saturday morning, with Bowral remaining undefeated throughout their season to clinch the decider 1-0.
The sidelines were a sea of both red and blue with a large turn out of supporters to urge their little heroes on.
Burrawang matched it with their fancied opposition for the first half, creating a lot of space on a consistent basis down the edge of the field, but they where unable to convert it into points.
Scores were locked at 0-0 at halftime and the pressure was on the unbeaten team.
In the other dugout, the young Revels side felt they could pull off the upset of the season.
The Kangaroos were awarded a short corner three minutes into the second half and after rebounding off half a dozen sticks, Anna Howe gave the final touch to put Bowral in front.
Bowral found their rhythm from here on in and shut their opposition out with a very mature show of ball control and passing.
Burrawang had a few chances late in the game with some exceptionally close shots on goal.
But the Bowral defence was just too strong, denying them the chance to take it to extra time.
Bowral Coach Neil Howe said “We played well all year, and today they did exactly as I asked of them. It has been a very happy undefeated year for the Kangaroos.
“All credit should go to Burrawang as well for putting up an excellent fight and being our strongest competitors all year.”
The win capped off a successful day for Bowral. The club’s under-9s beat Burrawang in their grand final earlier in the morning.
