A BUSLOAD of Bowral Hockey Club members travelled to Canberra to support club star Glenn Turner in the tri-nations tournament on Sunday.
Turner, a Bowral junior and current first grader, was ambushed by the starry-eyed supporters who had dressed in the national colours in support of their home-town hero.
And the 25-year old responded in the best way possible - with two goals for Australia A in their 3-0 defeat of Canada.
The double took his goal tally to four in four games and earned him an Australian first team call up for more matches against Canada today and tomorrow.
It has also given Turner a last-ditch effort to make the Australian team for the tour of New Zealand later this month.
Turner said he appreciated the support of the travelling party.
“I was mobbed by all the kids as soon as I came off the field,” he said.
“I remember doing the same thing a couple of times when I went to watch Australia play as a kid.
“It’s probably the most attention I have ever received.”
Turner may have played his last game for Bowral this season, with his commitments to Australia, and the Australian Institute of Sport in Perth ruling him out for the rest of the season.
But he hinted at making a shock come-back for the Southern Highlands semi-finals in September.
Bowral Hockey Club secretary Kelly Corby said Turner was a fantastic role model for the club’s juniors.
“He and the rest of the Australia A side signed a heap of posters and had photos with the kids,” she said.
“After the game, he allowed the kids to take his sticks and have a hit on the other fields.
“He was such a great sport.”
The trip was sponsored by the Bowral Hockey Club, Road Coach, Hockey ACT and McDonalds Mittagong.
