MITTAGONG and Bowral play a catch up game tonight with the winner to claim the women’s first grade minor premiership.
In a true testament to the closeness of the competition this year, if Bowral win they can overtake Mittagong, but if they lose they will remain in third place.
The two teams met on Friday night and the defending champions Mittagong picked up the points with a hard-fought 2-1 win.
The Lady Lions’ ever-dangerous striker Pippin Saunders opened the scoring in the ninth minute when she latched on to a pass from Jasmine Bailey.
Mittagong equalised just after the break with Tina Moore banging a short corner into the back of the goals.
But two minutes later the Lady Lions restored their lead with a short corner goal of their own.
Jemma Delamont slotted the goal to put Mittagong back in front 2-1.
Mittagong coach Yolande Isedale said there was little between the two teams and the Lady Lions had to work hard for the win.
Bowral coach Paul Bunt said Mittagong were too good on the night, but tonight’s match could go his team’s way.
“It’s such a close competition that any of the top four teams can beat anyone else on their day,” he said.
Bunt said Felicity Miller and goalkeeper Eleanore Woods were his team’s best on Friday night.
Robertson storm into playoffs
ROBERTSON are the form team heading into the Highlands hockey semi-finals, beating Burrawang 3-0 on Saturday to storm into the finals.
The black and golds have mustered a full strength team over the past few matches and results are starting to flow their way again after a mid-season slump.
Kylie Bisby scored two of Robertson’s goals, while captain-coach Jo Bisby picked up her first goal of the season.
“It’s the best we have played against Burrawang all year and a good way to head into the semi’s,” Jo Bisby said.
“We have a bit of momentum up now so hopefully we can keep it going.”
The loss meant Burrawang ended 2009 without a win.
But their coach Trevor Donovan said the team was still in good spirits and most of the players were keen to do better next season.
“Our defence is still reasonably solid, but we need to keep working on our attack next season,” he said.
“The attitude has been right all season and the girls are looking forward to go again next year.”
