A PENALTY stroke with 10 minutes left on the clock sealed an historic 2-1 win for Bowral on Saturday.
Bowral coach Paul Bunt said his team’s grand final win over Robertson capped a remarkable turnaround of fortunes this season.
“They have come a long way this year,” he said.
“If you look at where we were at the start of the season and compared it to the grand final, we improved out of sight.
“We were always the easy-beats side, so the girls really enjoyed winning.”
It was Bowral’s first win in the top grade for more than 30 years.
The Blues opened the scoring 20 minutes into the first half when striker Stacey Turner pounced on a loose ball inside the circle to make it 1-0.
Robertson equalised just after halftime when Kylie Bisby scored a goal on the counter-attack to set up a thrilling final half hour.
Bowral piled pressure on Robertson, picking up short corner after short corner, but Robertson’s defences held firm.
Tatum Wright and Jo Bisby blocked countless short corners before Bowral were awarded a penalty stroke when the umpire ruled the ball hit a Robertson player’s foot on its way into the goals.
Bowral’s Simone Bunt made no mistake from the spot, sparking raucous celebrations on the sidelines.
Robertson pushed for the final 10 minutes but they couldn’t come up with another goal to take the game into extra time.
Robertson captain-coach Jo Bisby said it was a heart-breaking loss.
“I don’t mind losing at all - but for it to come down to a stroke was pretty tough,” she said.
