BOWRAL continued its high-scoring form, knocking off second placed Moss Vale 4-2 in the women’s first grade hockey match of the round last Friday night.
The Blues have now scored 10 goals in their last two starts, opening the floodgates and reigniting their premiership hopes.
Coach Paul Bunt talked down Bowral’s chance of taking the title, but they are only one point behind Mittagong in the minor premiership race with few rounds remaining.
Kelly Corby’s spectacular goal from the left-hand baseline into the top right hand corner was a definite contender for goal of the year, according to Bunt.
“That was a stunning goal and something you rarely see in women’s hockey,” Bunt said.
It was Corby’s second goal in two weeks. Bowral’s other goals were scored by Sam Gillard, Stacey Turner and Claire Howe.
“Claire Howe was very brave,” Bunt said.
“She copped a broken nose from a bit of bad luck.
“Other than that it was an all-round solid team performance.”
Bunt said Moss Vale’s goalkeeper Mel Clout was the player of the match, a view shared by Moss Vale coach Sandra Sharpe.
“For a 15-year-old kid being smacked at by the like of Jade Close a [NSW] Arrows player, she didn’t take a step back,” Sharpe said.
Moss Vale’s goals were scored by Brooke Hawke and the red-hot Carla Temporali, but Bowral scored twice in the final 10 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.
“The [Moss Vale] were quite pleased with how they played,” Sharpe said.
“I think we didn’t mark tight enough, but credit to Bowral they deserved the win.”
o IN the other match, Burrawang scared ladder leaders Mittagong with a goal in the opening minutes of their clash on Saturday.
But the defending champions hit back with goals to Jasmine Bailey, Jemma Delamont, Pippin Saunders and Cindy Garrard to take the match 4-1.
“Our teamwork was excellent on Saturday, it’s very pleasing to have four different goal scorers,” Mittagong coach Yolande Isedale said.
“Fullback Brooke Wortz was our best, playing with a great deal of confidence.”
