Lions let Robertson off the hook at Welby

16/07/2008 10:58:00 AM
Robertson have pulled three points clear in third spot after they edged out Mittagong 2-1 at Welby and Fairy Meadow lost to Wests 6-5 in Illawarra first grade men’s hockey on Sunday.

Bowral capped off a great weekend for the club with a 6-2 thrashing of Dapto. It was the first time this season that both the men and women won on the same weekend.

Mittagong went ahead 1-0 through Jake Mercieca 10 minutes into the second term after the teams were deadlocked 0-0 at halftime.

Robertson captain Damien Gair equalised shortly afterwards through a short corner and the Schofield brothers, Jed and Gus, combined to seal the win six minutes out from time.

"It was a great deflection by Gus," Gair said.

There was no love lost between the two Highland outfits and Gair was sinbinned three minutes from the end following an altercation with Lion Dave Elliott.

"I gave him a good shove but it is all part of the game," Gair said.

Robertson's skipper said the team was happy to get away with the win and, despite still not capitalising on a lot of their opportunities, they were creating many, which was a positive.

Robertson's Jed Scholfield, Scott Denny and Darren Airey stood out.
