ROBERTSON have climbed from fourth place on the Southern Highlands Hockey women’s first grade ladder to storm into this Saturday’s grand finals.
The Spuddies are peaking at the right time of the season and are on a four-game unbeaten run, a rarity for any first grade team this year given the tightness of the competition.
Short corner specialists Robertson scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-1 win and end Mittagong’s season.
The Lady Lions opened the scoring in just the 12th minute when Jasmine Bailey latched on to Jemma Delamont’s pass.
Robertson had chances of their own in the first term but had to wait until after the break to equalise.
Emma Bisby made it 1-all when she scored off a short corner in the 40th minute and set up an exciting final 20 minutes.
In front of the biggest crowd of the weekend, Robertson’s ace Brooke Handley put the black and golds in front for the first time in the match.
Robertson ground out the final eight minutes to book a berth in Saturday’s grand final.
“I hope our run hasn’t come to an end yet,” Robertson captain-coach Jo Bisby said.
“It was a gutsy effort by the whole team.”
Mittagong were disappointed to be knocked out with coach Yolande Isedale conceding her team played its best hockey mid-season.
“We had our chances on Saturday but it wasn’t to be,” Isedale said.
“We would like to wish Bowral and Robertson all the best for next weekend.”
The Lady Lions had hoped to defend their breakthrough title from last year, but Isedale said most of the girls had already vowed to try again next season.
With the average age of the squad only 19, they hope they are on the verge of a golden period for the club.
“The skill level is very high at Mittagong, although we are still learning to deal with the physicality of the older players,” Isedale said.
“We are getting better at handling this and with another season behind us we’ll be stronger for the experience.”
