Spud’s timely boost

ROBERTSON head into tomorrow’s first grade grand final knowing they have the best player in the Illawarra men’s hockey association playing in black and gold.

Jed Schofield, 20, and his Robertson teammates, are taking a bus to Wollongong tonight to bring home the coveted men’s first grade player of the year award.

It is the first time a Southern Highlands player has been voted the competition’s best player.

Despite the celebration, Robertson’s players have vowed to save the big party for Saturday night when they match up against Mittagong.

Robertson were the best Highlands team in the Illawarra competition, but Mittagong rolled them a fortnight ago in a physical major semi-final to book the first place in the grand final.

Both teams have been quick to claim underdog status, but both are confident they have a few tricks up their sleeve to take home the trophy.
