ROBERTSON repelled a fired up Mittagong to win a classic first grade men’s grand final 1-0 on Saturday night.
There was little between the teams all season, with both sides winning two of their encounters. And Saturday was no different.
Robertson had more chances, but Mittagong’s goalkeeper Tim Neven kept his team in the game with some crucial saves.
Up the other end, Robertson custodian Mick van Haeff proved his worth with two cracking saves late in the game to defend his team’s cleansheet and set up the win.
In freezing conditions, the onfield action was hot from the opening whistle.
Robertson’s Ben Wright broke the deadlock with the game’s only goal in the 22nd minute.
Wright latched onto a wayward shot from his brother Nathan and found the back of the goal.
The goal settled Robertson’s nerves and they looked like extending their lead before halftime but Neven refused to conceded a second goal.
The second half was a see-sawing affair, with the game opening up into an end-to-end clash.
But the Spuds held on to pick up their fourth-straight Whyte Cup.
“All the boys came out and played good hockey,” Robertson captain Damian Gair said.
Gair said van Haeff and Matt Mauger were his team’s best, but he heaped praise on Neven.
“Tim Neven was awesome for them,” Gair said.
“We had heaps of chances but couldn’t get more than one past him.”
Mittagong coach Glen Isedale said he was proud of his team’s effort in the decider and said they had come a long way throughout the season.
“The boys gave it their best but couldn’t get that goal,” Isedale said.
“Our team will come back better from that game, with a bit more experience and a bit stronger and faster next season.”
In other Robertson news, grand final goal scoring hero Ben Wright also won a match-race sprint between the three Wrights in the post-game celebrations.
Ben beat brothers Nathan and Mitch in an end-to-end dash on the turf at Welby.
Robertson’s presentation night has been set for October 17.
