Southern Highlands horse breeders have put themselves on the horse racing industry’s radar following a spate of locally bred group 1 winners.
Werai Park Stud, near Moss Vale, bred seven-year–old Sarrera won its second group 1 race in as many weeks after taking out the $500,000 Doomben Cup in Brisbane on Saturday.
The Queensland success follows on from Sarrera’s maiden group 1 triumph at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick earlier in the month.
At the Queen Elizabeth Stakes champion jockey Damien Oliver and Sarrera beat Australian Derby winner Nom Du Jeu and Melbourne cup favourite, Tuesday Joy.
The Stakes win was Werai Park’s first group 1 victory.
Other recent Highland bred group 1 winners include Manx Park’s Moss Vale bred Racing To Win, which won the Sydney Cup, and Tobermery Stud’s No Wine No Song, which won the Daily Telegraph Stakes on the same day.
Werai Park stud manager Peter Durney said the area was thriving.
