Weir shows no fear

13 Nov, 2009 09:23 AM
YOUNG jockey Samantha Weir got her riding career off to the best possible start, steering home the outsider Photograph in her first ever race ride.

The Kembla Grange trackwork rider, who originally hails from Bargo, used to work as a riding instructor but is pleased with her career change.

“I was sick of working at a riding school, so I thought about becoming a jockey,” she said.

“I’ve been doing trackwork riding for 12 months or so now and we thought it was about time to go in a race.”

Weir led Photograph from start to finish, at the juicy odds of $9 in a five horse race.

“They told me she was a good chance of winning so I got to the front and didn’t have to worry about much else,” Weir said.

“Because I got up front I didn’t have to fight for a spot or worry about getting kick around or anything.”

It was Weir’s only ride of the day, but she already has more rides booked in for next week’s Hay Picnic Races.

The win was also a perfect way to celebrate her 21st birthday which falls in the coming weeks.
