THE Fitzroy Falls Fire Trail Marathon will chalk up its ninth year when the gun is fired at Fitzroy Falls tomorrow.
It is a tough marathon, starting at the McGee-owned Twin Falls Cabins on Throsby Road and traversing some undulating country on fire trails out to Meryla Pass and back along the escarpment edge.
This year, there are entries from four runners who have competed in 100km races in 2008: Daniel Robins, Rod Cutler, Adam Carter and Vic Anderson. David Vlotman is back after having completed the very arduous Comrades Ultra Marathon (87km) in South Africa in a time of eight hours and 31 minutes.
Wayne Donges, Michael Corles, Dave Hromow, and Vic Anderson will line-up for their ninth straight appearance at the Falls run.
Entries from women totalled 25 last year and this should be exceeded tomorrow. Entries to date include the well-credentialed Kerrie Bremner from Wagga Wagga.
One of the reasons for the popularity of the event is the support runners receive out on the course. Up to 50 volunteers from the various Rural Fire Services in the area will be throughout the forest distributing drinks, fruit and encouragement.
All proceeds go to the Fitzroy Falls Rural Fire Brigade.
