COLO VALE brothers Jamie and Hugh Gabor have been selected to represent NSW at the national artistic gymnastics championships next month.
The pair fly to Brisbane next Friday to compete in their respective divisions.
St Michael’s Mittagong school captain Jamie, 10, will compete in the under-12 level six competition while his brother, Hugh, 12, is in the under-13 level seven.
Both boys have been idenitified as potential Olympic-level gymnasts and their development is being fast-tracked by Gymnastics NSW.
Their mother, Mel Gabor, herself a gymnastics coach, said the pair usually train four times per week.
“Unfortunately the Southern Highlands doesn’t have a gymnastics coaching service for the level our boys are at so they train at the South Coast Gymnastics Academy [in Wollongong],” she said.
“They usually train for about 12 hours per week – which is a lot less than some of their competitors but it’s the best we can do with the travel time.”
The boys will train with their respective NSW teams next Friday to Sunday, before the final eight-person squads are cut to six.
The competition takes place the following Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The pair have to travel and stay with their team and chaperones and will not have access to their parents or family, which is all part of the training.
