WITH a strong wind behind them in the second half, Robertson-Burrawang ran away 5-1 winners against Mittagong at Hampden Park.
The match was locked a 1-1 at the break, but Robertson used the conditions in the second term to run all over the Lions.
Striker Adam Bartlett bagged a hat-trick for the home team while Nathan Macgraw also got on the scoresheet.
Mittagong were guilty of playing long balls with the wind in the first half, while Robertson used it more smartly in the second.
Bartlett and defender Henry Cabban were Robertson’s best.
Robertson coach Damien Plain said playing at home suited his team’s game.
“A few years ago we were unbeatable at Hampden Park with the expansive game we played,” Plain said.
“We knocked the ball around in the second half and controlled the game a lot better than we have been doing.”
Hampden Park is one of the biggest fields in the association and it gives teams a chance to hold possession and play with width.
Plain said some opposition sides had caught on to the secret to success at Hampden Park.
“If you play good football and knock the ball around you generally win there,” he said.
“We still try and play that way and are still getting pretty good results at home.”
Mittagong have struggled in their first season in the top grade, but Plain said if they kept the same team together they could be a competition force in coming years.
“They have some good young players and in another year or two they could be up there with the leaders,” he said.
“You can’t expect a team to come up and perform unbelievably, they just need to stick at it.”
The Lions have registered one win and two draws from their eight matches and are fifth on the ladder.
