TOO many mistakes cost Moss Vale a chance to move themselves into second spot in the Mittagong RSL first grade competition yesterday.
Oakdale worked over the Dragons to the tune of 32-10 after leading 12-4 at the break at Sid Sharpe Memorial Oval. Moss Vale had their chances to get back in the game after the break but failed to capitalise.
After Worker Russell Odgers crossed to push the lead out to 16-4 following a Dragons’ mistake, Josh Saunders made a great line break only to get caught by some desperate Oakdale cover defence that forced him to cough up the ball right on the line.
Minutes later, Scott Drewe bombed a certain try out wide and Nick Crouch made Moss Vale pay by scoring in the 59th minute to give Oakdale a commanding 20-4 advantage.
An unlucky bounce and a missed timed take led to Workers’ halfback Bart Masters crossing for his second in the 70th minute to make it 26-4. Robert Wiya then crossed, for only the Dragons’ second try, in the 75th minute.
Ty O’Brien sealed the 22-point win for Oakdale in the last minute after a miscommunication led to the Dragons handing possession back to Oakdale from the kick off instead of catching the ball on the sideline and getting a penalty from halfway. This stuff up between Brett Cummings and Steve Fairbairn typified the Dragons’ plight yesterday.
Earlier, Masters opened the scoring in the fourth minute before Dragon Chris Barton made it 6-4 10 minutes later. Worker Matt McCauley then scored right on the break.
