Greeks win Plate at World Cup

25/07/2008 6:47:00 PM
BOWRAL’S Shane Rofe was a lynchpin in Greece’s Plate win at the University Rugby League World Cup in Brisbane last week.

Rofe, a Picton reserve grader, made the most of his slim Greek heritage to help the Greeks exceed all expectations in their first Uni World Cup. Rofe’s grandfather was born in the home of civilisation.

The Greeks beat France 14-12 in the Plate final after missing the semi finals due to a controversial 22-20 loss to England and a 54-0 hammering by the Aussies.

The Mediterraneans beat Scotland 14-0 in their first game after having only two hours training together, and also accounted for Ireland 28-10. Australia beat England 26-16 in the final, notching up back-to-back titles.

Greek and Narellan DNC Cup coach Chris Molatsiotis said Rofe was outstanding.

“He was fantastic, he was one of our top three players. He was great out of dummy half and I don’t think he missed a tackle,” he said.

“Most people thought we were here to make up the numbers, but we did terrific considering we were thrown together the week before. [Rofe] has a really bright future and I can’t believe he doesn’t play first grade.”
