Lions burst Bowral’s bubble

05 Aug, 2009 10:54 AM
MITTAGONG have returned to their grand final winning form with a 5-1 win of the red-hot Bowral team in women’s first grade hockey.

Bowral went undefeated through June and July, but the dawn of a new month saw them beaten on Saturday.

The Lady Lions played fast hockey and used the speed of striker Pip Saunders and Jemma Delamont to counter-attack down their right side in particular.

Saunders scored the first goal when she deflected a Delamont pass high into the net.

Bowral equalised in the 27th minuete, but Saunders and Delamont combined again for Delamont to score before the break.

The two teams traded chances to open the second half before Mittagong scored three goals in four minutes to take the competition points.

Delamont scored another two, one from a short corner and one field goal, and Megan Eringa scored the fifth and last.

Coach Yolande Isedale hinted that her team is getting back to its best.

“This was the fastest match we have played this year,” she said.

“It was a great team effort.”

Bowral coach Paul Bunt said the alarm bells were not ringing after his team’s defeat.

He said the team was without Sam Gillard, Steph Allman, Belinda McNaught, Claire Howe and Sarah Stone and was always going to struggle against the Lions.

“They scored five goals and were too good,” Bunt said.

“Normally our left side defence is really good but on the weekend it wasn’t so good.

“We didn’t have a couple of our quicker players and those two [Delamont and Saunders] were too fast.”

The coach said Felicity Miller was strong at the back while left-half Christie Lake did her best to repel Mittagong’s attacks.

Women’s first grade table: Mittagong 19, Bowral 18, Moss Vale 17, Robertson 16, Burra 4.

Robertson beat Burra

A GOAL in the opening minutes was enough for Robertson to record a slender 1-0 win over Burrawang in the Friday night match.

Robertson coach Jo Bisby said Kylie Bisby opened the scoring in the second minute and neither team could add to the scoreline.

Bisby said she was happy with the win, Robertson’s second over Burrawang in the past three matches.
