Lions continue Jets woes

3/07/2009 1:19:00 PM
THE well-drilled Mittagong Lions under-18A’s side dished out Narellan’s 11th straight loss with a 32-6 win at Mittagong Sprtsground on Saturday.

Mittagong had their fair share of luck early in the first half when Kieran Sandor pounced on a Corey Martin kick that rebounded off another player, scoring adjacent to the posts to take a 6-0 lead.

The Jets then gave away three consecutive penalties to gift the Lions two very similar tries off simple passing plays inside the Jets 20-metre line.

Narellan managed to hit back through Bryce Smith making the halftime score 18-6.

Narellan coach Greg Hall his said he considered his team a chance in the second half.

“I still thought we were in with a massive chance at halftime to claim our first victory of the season after some of the deficits we have faced at the break in earlier games this year against the stronger Campbelltown-based sides,” Hall said.

But the Lions snuffed out any hope of a Jets comeback when centre Ash Brown made a break down the sideline to leave a simple draw and pass to put their winger in for the first try of the second half.

Tensions flared not long after and a few punches were traded between the two sides.

Narellan ended up losing their lone try scorer when he was sent off for back chatting the referee after he was reprimanded for the altercation.

Martin gave a nice ball to Kieran Bishop close to the line and he barged his way over to score his second try for the day.

Mittagong scored one more try before the end of the match to give a scoreline that was more reflective of the match.

“I was happy with the win because it was due to consistent play and good footy on our part,” Mittagong captain Simon Bartlett said,.

Lions prop Sandor claimed man of the match honours for his double-try effort and solid defence.

In other games East Campbelltown thumped Picton 74-0, Collegians had a close victory over Ashcroft 32-24, while All Saints smashed a weakened Macquarie Fields side 56-6.
