STERN halftime words from Bowral head coach Val Tyson and a rejuvenated second half effort was enough for the Blacks to record their second win in three games on Saturday.
With the match transferred from Kiama to Bundanoon Oval due to the torrential rain on the coast last week, Bowral started poorly and trailed 15-0 at halftime.
Missing frontline players Troy Ingrey, Tom Whymark, Daniel Gates and Jack Gates, the Blacks struggled from the outset and played unstructured rugby in the first half and looked like a team at the bottom of the ladder.
But Tyson said his words at the break fell on eager ears and the performance improved out-of-sight.
“Almost immediately the team performance lifted,” Tyson said.
“ The scrum started to dominate and produce better possession and after slipping back into our usual, uncomplicated lineout structure, this phase produced better possession as well.”
Early in the second half, the Blacks were camped deep in Kiama territory and, after many phases and a rolling maul, Ben Nickell barged over for the team’s first try.
Soon after, Marty Garland finished off more enterprising rugby and Jake Moore converted to reduce Kiama’s lead to 15-12.
Bowral’s players were buzzing, with swarming defence, strong set piece possession and mauling to gain ground and penalties.
Moore kicked a penalty goal to level the match at 15-15 before Ben Lewis stole the ball off his skipper Mark Fruend and scored the winning try.
The final score was 20-15.
Bowral’s best and fairest was Corey Ahling, with the Nickell twins, Ben and Andrew picking up points again.
Halfback Paddy Byrne and outside centre Andrew Strode picked up the minor points, with Ben Nickell getting player’s player for the second time in three weeks.
The Blacks play University at Eridge Park this Saturday. Kick off is at 3pm.
