THE Bundanoon Highlanders played their final game of the season on Saturday, and were unlucky not to finish off 2009 with a win.
The game was a sea sawing affair, with the lead changing hands several times throughout the match before the Highlanders were edged out 29-24 by Kiama.
Bundy were first to chalk up the scoreboard, when hooker Chris Ingmire powered over the white line utilising great body height and determination. The conversion was unsuccessful and Bundanoon skipped away to a 5-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as Kiama hit back five minutes later with what can only be described as a soft try. Three missed tackles by the Highlanders proved costly. The try was converted putting Kiama 7-5 in front.
The big home crowd lifted the Highlanders into action, and once again it was Chris Ingmire leading by example.
He charged at the line but was dragged down short. Nevertheless, his break provided fast ball which was spread wide to the left and Burnham was in for Bundy’s second.
The try was converted and the Highlanders were back in front 12-7.
The sea-saw fell Kiama’s way on the break and a good back line movement had the right winger going over. He was allowed to improve his position and Kiama hit the lead 14-12 going into the break.
Two great second half tries by Richie Martin and Josh Grant were not quite enough to get Bundy home, as Kiama replied with three.
So ends another season.
True to form, after the game the Highlanders were not drowning in their sorrows; they could be heard planning the end of season trip over a drink or two.
Last year the boys headed to the Wagga Wagga picnic races and so it’ll be again this year too.
A lot of hard work was put in during the season by the sponsors, wives, girlfriends, parents and coaches, and the players pay tribute to them all.
